Tips For Winning Your Fantasy Football League
66
So your either new to fantasy football or unsuccessful in an already existing league. I can help you out with some tips on how to turn your luck around or to start out on the right foot next season.
The most common rookie mistake I have seen is that owners like to draft many players from the same team, like the Vikings, Patriots, etc. This is often a risky move since your team will be decimated during that teams bye week and any week in which a less that favorable match-up is in line.
If your fantasy draft is online, make sure not to miss it. Write it down on you calendar and have other friends remind you the day of the draft. If you know ahead of time that you have other commitments, most leagues will allow to to pre-rank so that the computer's auto-draft will draft players according to your rankings other than that of Fox's, ESPN's, NFL Network's, Yahoo's, etc.
Don't draft a Kicker until the 14th or 15th round. It is a wasted pick if you do so any sooner. Kickers are incredibly unpredictable at the beginning of the season. Remember that the best fantasy kickers aren't always on the best football teams. Look for teams that make drives downfield but cant seem to get into the endzone and end up settling for field goals. Some leagues will reward you for more points based on the kicks length, or will subtract points for missed field goals. So make sure you look up the scoring system before the draft so you can draft accordingly. If you league rewards you with 5 points for a 50+ yard field goal then you might wanna look for a kicker that plays home games in a Dome (Hanson), plays at a higher elevation (Denver), or is renowned for their kicking power (Janikowski).
Analyze the scoring system before you draft. This should help you tailor your draft strategy and assist you in setting your team's line-up each week. Some leagues will award you points per reception (PPR) and others may have bonuses for going over a certain yardage milestone.
During the season make use of the Free Agent Waiver Wire. Don't get too attached to the players you drafted. Most teams are lucky to have kept over half of them at season's end. If you have a player that is under-performing then drop him and get an upgrade at that position. Many great players have come out of nowhere mid-season to post amazing numbers.
Don't get too hung up on last year's stats and this years predictions. Avoid players that are injury prone and inconsistent throughout the years. If some changes have occurred in the teams depth chart, take that into consideration as well. Maybe last years #1 RB is now #2 and will split carries. Good fantasy players can post great stats in multiple categories. RB's that run and catch are great to have. QB's that pass and run are also great assets.
Fix your team every week, especially during the middle of the season when bye weeks come into play. You can keep a successful team marching forward by only signing in twice a week. One time for waiver claims and the other for defining your weekly roster.
